“Be curious. You will not know everything at first and no one expects you to, so ask questions, listen, say ‘yes’ to different opportunities, and be open to learning new things.”

In the evolving world of internal audit and corporate governance, the journey of building and leading a highly effective team is both challenging and rewarding. Megan, nVent’s senior director of internal audit, shares her experiences and insights from her transformative journey within the company, highlighting the critical role of mentorship, teamwork, and inclusion in driving success. She works in our headquarters in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and has been with us for five years, which have been marked by continuous learning.

Megan’s journey at nVent began shortly after the company’s spin-off from Pentair, when an old mentor recruited her to help build out the internal audit team. “I was excited to help build something with someone I trusted for a new and growing company,” Megan recalls. Starting as the internal audit manager on the finance side, her exemplary leadership soon led to her promotion, broadening her responsibilities to include both the finance and IT internal audit teams. This advancement not only signaled her capabilities but also created opportunities for others on her team.

Now, leading the group for three years, Megan appreciates the diversity of her daily challenges and the opportunities to collaborate across the organization. “Each day at nVent is different for me, but there is always some element of collaboration with my team and business partners,” she says. Megan emphasizes the value of working with diverse groups across the organization, which has enabled her team to engage in a variety of projects beyond financial audits, including cybersecurity, data privacy, and ESG, to name a few.

Beyond her audit responsibilities, Megan is passionately involved with nVent’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Advisory Council (IDAC), where she co-leads Community pillar initiatives and looks forward to achieving ambitious goals for 2024. Her dedication to inclusion and diversity reflects nVent’s broader mission, where “you cannot have diversity without first having inclusion,” as stated often by their Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer Laura Brock. This ethos, Megan believes, allows everyone to show up as their most authentic self at work.

Megan also sponsors the Finance Leadership Development Program (FLDP), a testament to her commitment to nurturing future finance leaders. This role allows her to work closely with the talent acquisition team, fostering a rewarding partnership that continually contributes to her professional growth.

Reflecting on her personal values and how they connect with nVent’s Win Right values, Megan underscores the importance of Absolute Integrity, especially as an internal audit leader. However, she asserts that Respect and Teamwork, another core value, is a foundational element that makes other values more attainable. This philosophy has been pivotal in her successful leadership and the cohesive performance of her team.

Megan’s personal journey at nVent is also marked by significant moments in life, including welcoming her first child in 2023. The parental leave policy and support of her teammates underscore the commitment to our employees’ well-being and work-life balance. Megan shared, “nVent and my team were extremely supportive while I was out on leave and welcomed me back warmly when I returned to the workplace. I cherish that early time at home with my daughter that nVent made possible.”

For those embarking on their career or looking to grow within their field, Megan advises, “Be curious. You will not know everything at first and no one expects you to, so ask questions, listen, say ‘yes’ to different opportunities, and be open to learning new things.” This approach of curiosity and openness to learning has been a cornerstone of Megan’s journey at nVent.

Megan’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of strong mentorship, the value of inclusive teamwork, and the importance of embracing every learning opportunity. At nVent, building a successful career is not just about individual achievements but about contributing to a culture of respect, inclusion, and continuous growth.
